Who We Are
You aren’t the anxious, moody ball of defenses and adaptations you think you are.
Sit with enough clients and some interesting patterns begin to emerge. Someone describes themselves as a fixed object. I just don’t like people and prefer being alone. I don’t really need much. I've always taken care of everyone. I just call it like it is. They say it like they are giving their height or weight. The reality is, however, that all of it was learned, most of it early, most of it in response to something that made learning it necessary.
That learned thing is what we call the Person. It is not merely a fake self or a mask. It is a genuine construction, built by a child who needed it, when they needed it, to survive. The trouble is that it keeps doing its job long after the conditions have changed. The strategy outlives the situation and hardens into an identity, and by then it isn't experienced as a strategy at all. It's experienced as who you are.
Underneath the Person is the Human. Not a hidden true self waiting to be uncovered, but the living nervous system that was there before the construction started, mostly unavailable because the construction takes so much attention and external validation to maintain. Survive Mode keeps the guard up and the boundary thick. Live Mode is what becomes possible when the guarding and hiding stop being necessary.
So, the work is subtraction—unlearning, more than addition. Less Person, More Human.
None of this was invented here. We draw on some of the most compelling and prevailing psychotherapeutic frameworks while weaving our unique clinical experience throughout. What we've done is put it in a language people can actually use on a Tuesday, in their own kitchen, in the middle of an argument, not something you keep seeing on social media or hear your M.D. say you need with your medication.
In practice this means we will be direct with you. We will name what we see more often than just waiting for you to arrive at it alone. We will treat the Self you bring in as something you are doing, continuously, rather than something you are stuck being. We do this with compassion, genuine care, understanding, but add a little therapeutic push when the right moment presents.
You deserve everything you want and need- we all do. But we are not entitled to it. You will need to change. You will need to look closely at your Self. You will need to be accountable, self-focused, and self-concerned in order to help and support the people of your life. We can help you change. And we cannot wait to start that journey with you. What are you waiting for?
